“What he said was that 缩骨功(Suō gǔ gōng)was real, only not in the way people imagined. Not suddenly, not like in a 武术 (wǔshù)novel. It took time. Great effort. He had to work himself through the bars slowly, part by part. First the hands, then the arms and shoulders, then the legs. The head was the hardest. He described it as something like a tortoise shedding its shell, or a lizard slipping out from within itself. Not transformation exactly, but a prolonged negotiation with the frame of the body.”
In preparation for their Off the Grid residency at Cas-co, five artists brought together by Kunstpodium T, hosted each other in their own spaces, practices and imaginations; stories were told, techniques tried, food prepared and they explored what really mattered in their collaboration. The fragment above, coming from a story shared by Yan-Bing Wu, left all five in awe.
With works from Beeke van Wingaarden, Didianne Leusink, Elisa Verkoelen, Maurice Meewisse, and Yan-Bing Wu
