“Good artists steal, bad artists copy,” spoke Banksy that borrowed it from Picasso, who borrowed it from TS Elliot, who borrowed it from another poet. The idea that artists are authentic geniuses that stand on the shoulders of giants, has remained quite persistent. With contemporary artists it is the case that many are inspired by predecessors.
Artist and Yearmaster 2019/2020 Niek Hendrix curated this exhibition with artists that are inspired by the artists that went before them. The participating artists and their sources of inspiration are: Bernard Baldus (Wesley Meuris & Timur Si Qin), Sander van Deurzen (Caspar David Friedrich), Jonathan van Doornum (architect Gottfried Semper), Rosa Johanna (Agnes Martin), Joelle Goutier (Christopher Wool), Anika Hochstenbach (Caravaggio), Ton Kraayeveld (Richard Hamilton), Giel Louws (Tarkovsky), Charles van Otterdijk (Cady Noland), Hans Overvliet (Christian Boltanski), Anna Püschel (Marcel Imsand), Lars Reen (Tony Oursler), Guus van der Velden (Nairy Bahgramian), Claudia Volders (Hildegard von Bingen).
The exhibition is on show from Friday 2 to Sunday 25 October 2020 at Kunstpodium T.
