A/M #2 Het Bloemetjesgordijn

The week after carnival Kunstpodium T presents Het Bloemetjesgordijn; an exhibition that opposes the cheesy, vulgar and one-sided associations that might come to mind when hearing the title. In the similarly named song Wim Kersten asks himself “Weet je wat ik wel zou willen zijn?” (meaning: Do you know what I would like to be?). “A floral curtain”, is his ambiguous reply. 

Memories about drunk bustling crowds and steamy pubs fade after close-reading the lyrics of the song. Those who take a closer look, read about hope and fear, about a struggle for life and desire for serenity. Dissecting this folklore song, brings a group of young artists together. The works in the exhibition are reveries, speculations and personal anecdotes that explore the multiplicity of wanting to be.  

From feminist perspectives on the child’s play “vadertje en moedertje” (meaning: daddy and mommy), to ridiculously disgusting 70’s curtains that smell like ash trays. From the subversive quality of the jester, to pretending to be a world renowned fashion designer. Wanting to be may seem like a game, but for some it is a dire necessity. Seen from the perspective of an immigrant, it means fitting in into a new environment and “trying to act like a native”. 

Esra Westerburgen, Eva van de Sande, Katayoon Valamanesh, Mike Anna and Dewi Bekker & Anouk van Klaveren (Das Leben am Haverkamp) explore the complexity of becoming and wanting to be.

By all means; it is not easy being a curtain.
