Online: Apprentice Master exhibition #9: This Screen is not a Pedestal
8 June - 21 June
Apprentice Master exhibition #9
This Screen is not a Pedestal
This Screen is not a Pedestal brings together the work of four artists from four European countries. Each of these artists has in their own way a very tactile and spatial practice. Unable to translate their practices directly to an online environment, and often unable to attend their physical studios, they were forced to re-evaluate their old ways of working and come up with new strategies. How do we continue our work in a time of crisis, and how do we adapt to new forms and media without making compromises? Instead of focusing on an end product of sorts, the online environment became a testing ground to for new ideas, a multidimensional sketchbook of sorts. New projects, sketches and try-outs that are, like the artists, locked inside their studios and homes.
The various pages and spaces on the website intentionally do not refer to exhibition or gallery spaces, but more intimate and private spaces such as living rooms, kitchens and gardens. These works were produced in exactly these kind of spaces, and because of their nature it would feel unfitting to project them in the sterile space of a white cube. These works are in a state of flux, and are not the finished article. This screen is not a pedestal.
